Do I need an IC or ID?
Are you working on a project with scenes that contain physical intimacy or nudity?
Some productions may want to consult with an intimacy professional to better determine whether one is needed. Some productions will want an IC or ID to support intimacy such as kissing, although this is not an absolute must. In general, whether or not an Intimacy Coordinator of Intimacy Director is required depends on level of undress and what type of intimacy will be portrayed. As a specialist in choreography and context-based conversations of consent, I’m happy to talk with you about whether bringing an intimacy professional on board fits your productions needs.
What is Intimacy Coordination exactly?
Intimacy Coordinators or Directors are hired for scenes of nudity, simulated sex, intimacy, or hyper-exposure.
Anyone in a production may ask for an intimacy professional. Having an intimacy professional on board supports the entire production team in the safety, efficiency, and process of creating intimacy on stage or screen.
An intimacy coordinator or intimacy director is a liaison, advocate, and resource. Throughout the process, the IC serves as a resource for the director in fulfilling their vision and advocates for the actors towards their ability to inhabit their characters’ stories. An intimacy coordinator works with the script, director, actors, and production team to determine levels of consent, what language to send to legal, which modesty garments or barriers are needed, and, according to the level desired by the director, choreography. During shooting an IC checks in with the actors without disrupting the production flow and ensures closed set protocols and SAG AFTRA guidelines are followed. Similarly, an Intimacy Director works with the director, actors, technical personnel, designers, and production teams to gather consent levels, create choreography, and support the ongoing needs within a performance run. Having a specific person to handle all of these points of communication increases both efficiency and efficacy.
